00:00:00: Speed learning,
00:00:01: the success techniques for you and your life.
00:00:14: Hello!
00:00:15: And welcome to speedlearning – your podcast where you learn how to learn faster remember more and recall what you've learned with confident especially languages because we are specialized on teaching, learning and demonstrating languages.
00:00:31: This podcast is therefore also available in German French Spanish and Italian.
00:00:38: Today we are solving a problem many people face.
00:00:43: You sit down with the complex topic, read it once twice and think... I kind of get it but not really!
00:00:51: In this episode you'll learn a clear method to understand complex topics quickly and deeply without overwhelm.
00:00:59: so let's start Let's have a look why complex topics feel difficult.
00:01:05: They are not difficult because they're too hard, but it is too much information at once and there are missing connections And probably its no clear entry point for your brain.
00:01:20: So the problem isn't intelligence But structure.
00:01:24: One key idea Confusion comes from lack of structure Not from lack ability.
00:01:31: Now, what's the biggest mistake?
00:01:33: The biggest mistake is passive reading because well most people read highlight and keep reading.
00:01:43: And hope understanding will appear.
00:01:46: this is What we call in speed learning.
00:01:49: Hope Learning and Hope Learning rarely works.
00:01:54: Why ?
00:01:54: Because your brain is often just recognizing but not understanding ,and that why you need an active process.
00:02:02: If you read a text and understand it, You just have the illusion that you know because you cannot recall.
00:02:11: Recalling is key!
00:02:13: Anyway let's have look at this.
00:02:15: You need an active process And here are five step speed learning method That you can apply immediately.
00:02:23: Step one Overview before details The goal to see big picture.
00:02:30: Ask yourself what it is about or can you summarize in one sentence?
00:02:35: What three terms appear again and again.
00:02:38: Don't go deep, just scan!
00:02:42: Step two ask questions before diving into.
00:02:45: define your focus.
00:02:46: What do I understand yet?
00:02:48: What don't i understand yet?
00:02:50: ?
00:02:50: What's unclear & what to be able explain later?
00:02:54: This directs the attention.
00:02:58: Step three, chunking.
00:02:59: Break it down.
00:03:00: Split the topic into small parts One section one concept one example.
00:03:05: don't try to understand everything at once.
00:03:08: So understanding happens in small units not all At ones.
00:03:14: and then step four explain instead of rereading.
00:03:18: This is the most important step.
00:03:22: Explain the topic out loud or in writing.
00:03:25: Explain it to a friend, to a colleague...to your kids.
00:03:31: if you don't have friends colleagues or family explain it to your dog.
00:03:35: If You Don´t Have Any Animals Or Pets Explain It To A Plant.
00:03:39: They Will Love You Therefore Because they love carbon dioxide and when you talk with them you fertilize them With lots of Carbon Dioxide.
00:03:49: Just quick fun fact anyway.
00:03:53: explain the topic, even to yourself.
00:03:57: Talk to your self-explain as if you were teaching somewhere someone else.
00:04:04: Explain it first that a primary school kid could understand.
00:04:11: then a school leaving examination kit was preparing its A levels would understand and than professional will understand.
00:04:24: So you have to understand it, that you can describe in different levels.
00:04:31: And if you speak a foreign language which hopefully do explain it in a foreign languages as well.
00:04:39: so the point is If You Can't Explain It With Other Words Than Those That Are Written Down In Your Textbook Or In Your Course Material You don't fully understand it yet.
00:04:56: That's the point, you just have the illusion that you've understood it.
00:05:01: So close the gaps Now go back and check what was unclear.
00:05:08: Where did I struggle?
00:05:09: Then review only those parts Not everything again Only those parts And then use the Feynman technique Light A simple version.
00:05:17: Explain the topic in one sentence Give an example and Use Simple Language Or Foreign language whatever you like.
00:05:26: If you need complex terms to explain something, You probably don't understand it deeply yet.
00:05:32: Yeah that's the goal or the goal of simplicity real understanding.
00:05:40: well in my work I see three common mistakes.
00:05:44: mistake one people believe they need to understand everything.
00:05:49: Well no!
00:05:52: You need to.
00:05:55: In most topics you will not be able to understand everything in your whole life because things simply come to their limits of understanding.
00:06:08: Mistake two, just read it again.
00:06:12: okay do so but don't expect it to be effective.
00:06:17: no you need active processing.
00:06:21: that's I mean.
00:06:23: so many people come to me and say Sven I understand this text in Spanish, Italian French Dutch whatever language they want to learn perfectly but i can't give a conversation.
00:06:37: yes because you haven't active processed.
00:06:41: Because you are a passive learner.
00:06:46: and then the third mistake... You need speed learning, you need a method that really works.
00:06:57: That is proven!
00:06:59: It has been proven and it's proved every day because its simply works.
00:07:05: but unfortunately thats not what your learn in school Because in the school you have to sit there listen so the teacher...you have to inhale what they tell you..You have to learn passively.
00:07:18: Thats....the big problem.
00:07:22: This is how you're programmed to learn.
00:07:26: And now, You need to change it!
00:07:29: Change your learning habits.
00:07:32: Learn the way that you've learned before you came into school Because this is exactly what has happened.
00:07:38: Okay let's take a topic like photosynthesis Compound interest or grammar rule.
00:07:44: The wrong approach would be To reach ten pages and highlight everything Or two to write it down in your computer for your computer graveyard, where all the scripts are put and stored.
00:08:00: Or you write them by hand into some beautiful drawings... ...and some hearts and some flowers and some highlighting whatever highlighting nonsense.
00:08:14: No!
00:08:14: The better approach is Overview three questions, one section.
00:08:18: Explain it and close gaps.
00:08:20: And after twenty minutes you often understand more than two hours of passive reading.
00:08:24: After twenty minutes please make a break that your brain has time to create synaptic connections.
00:08:33: So here's the mini-exercise.
00:08:35: Try right now Pick any topic in your learning.
00:08:38: Two minute overview Write down three questions Read one section and explain in sixty seconds, that's all you need for now.
00:08:48: So let's summarize.
00:08:49: complex topics become easier if you get an overview ask questions break things into chunks explain actively and thats the most important point explain actively And finally fix gaps selectively.
00:09:07: understanding is an active process not a passive one.
00:09:12: this something to write into your textbook.
00:09:16: Understanding is an active process, you have to create the hardware in your brain so that you are able to recall again after this podcast episode.
00:09:30: take a few moments sit down and recall.
00:09:33: remember summarize for yourself what has been said In this episode.
00:09:40: And What Is It That You Would Like To Take?
00:09:44: Adapt?
00:09:45: to learn more effective.
00:09:49: All right, if this episode helped you well... You don't know if it did because ...you might feel.
00:09:57: yes I understand that now.
00:09:58: no you don't explain it to somebody else and practice it then it helps you!
00:10:05: And then subscribe.
00:10:06: try the method today and in the next episode we'll go one step further as always how-to store knowledge long term.
00:10:18: Big fun!
00:10:19: So for today, thanks for listening.
00:10:22: Thanks for sharing this podcast and thanks for nice reviews.
00:10:27: Thank you for subscribing.
00:10:30: And remember You don't need to read more You need to understand and explain better.
00:10:39: Bye-bye
00:10:40: At the end.
00:10:41: here's a quick insight at
00:10:43: it.
00:10:44: When
00:10:44: I study a specific topic, i always drink the same coffee or tea as an anchor.
